I talk about all the time on here of how dystopians are my absolute favorite books to read. And as I talk to people about the books that I'm reading, I am constantly asked, 'what the heck is dystopian?' So here you go. The term 'dystopian' comes from two Greek words that are literally translated bad/hard place. Basically, it is a society that is anti-utopian. Something about this society is extremely unpleasant. Whether that unpleasantry is the government, zombies, infectious diseases, etc., that is up to the creativity of the authors.
Just a few dystopian titles include (Click hyperlinked titles to see my review):
The Hunger Games Shatter Me Animal Farm
1984 Divergent Legend
Farenhieit 451 Delerium Across the Universe
The Host The Left Behind Enigma Black
So why did I fall in love with this genre that could be perceived as depressing? Most dystopians that I have read, the authors take great pride in not just writing a story, but they create an entire new world for that story to exist within. With this extra care put into the book, it makes the process of the reader loosing themselves within the pages almost automatic and effortless.
One of the most popular dystopian topics right now is ZOMBIES! There are so many books, movies, and television shows devoted to the wonderful world of zombies, and they are all so much fun (I know... I have a twisted sense of humor)!
So what is my favorite zombie book, you ask? Hands down... Warm Bodies by Issac Marion! You may recognize the title from the film that came out earlier this year, but we will get to that in a minute. Warm Bodies is a unique look at zombies since it is about them coming back to life thanks to the amazing power of love. If you haven't read it yet... well shame on you. Ok, that was a little harsh. But seriously, you need to buy this book and read it. It is wildly imaginative, vastly creative, and just a great book. You will laugh out loud, cry, and fall in love with the main zombie. Marion writes the story from R's perspective. And yes, we actually do get to see his thoughts (didn't think you would ever see that phrase when talking about zombies, did you?)!
Now, Warm Bodies the movie. Er ma gerd.... one of the best movies that I have seen this year! There are a couple of awkward moments in the book (inter-zombie love, marriage, etc.), but thankfully, these moments were omitted from the movie. And honestly, this is one of the tamest zombie flicks that you can watch, other than Scooby Doo re-runs (Zoinks!). I went to see this with a couple of friends, and we were literally crying and doubled over from laughter! And my friends are NOT fans of scary films.
