Angels of the Knights - Fallon

Summary from Goodreads:
When Fallon Angell died at the age of sixteen, her life changed forever.

The hallowed world of Emperica is everything she had ever hoped for as a mortal—immeasurable beauty, unconditional love and light. But, with affection for humankind still burning within her, she joins the Knight Caste to train as an angel warrior. As a Knight, she will give up her wings and return to the place that killed her to use her unique powers to search out and destroy the evil Kjin that roam the earth. As a Knight, she will stop at nothing to protect the mortals in her care.

The elders warn her that the path she chose will be a solitary one. That she will not have the same bond with humans as she once did. But, as far as she knows, the elders had never met Kade Royce.

When her duties place her in the path of this handsome former cop, emotions buried long ago rise to the surface and she is powerless to ignore the depth of her feelings for this young man. She knows instinctively that she has found what most people search their entire lives for.

Ignoring the risks, she invites him into her world of danger, but soon their lives collide with explosive consequence. As a result, Fallon realizes with heartbreaking despair that she can no longer hide from the painful truth. In order for Kade to live, she must destroy him.

About the Author
Thank you for visiting my Goodread's profile. I am Valerie Zambito, and I live in upstate New York with my husband and three sons. After having been involved in a busy sales career for fifteen years, a great love of world building, character creation, and all things magic led to the publication of my first adult epic fantasy series, ISLAND SHIFTERS, in October of 2011. Since then, I have added two additional books to this series and wrote the first book in a new teen paranormal series called ANGELS OF THE KNIGHTS.

My reading preference is fantasy as well and I devour in copious amounts. In my opinion, there’s nothing like it! Great fantasy grants us entry into a world beyond our own that is filled with adventure, mystery and danger. How exciting to enjoy a front row seat to human struggles of epic proportions. Struggles that tug at our heartstrings and elicit real emotion.

I gravitate to fantasy with heroic elements. I like strong, confident men who never back down from a fight against evil. The kind who will not hesitate to throw himself between a woman and a fire-breathing dragon. I like strong women, too. The kind who will appreciate the offer, but is more inclined to push the man out of the way and take care of the dragon herself. ;)

Bitter Angel - 5-Star Review

Every once in a great while you read a book that haunts you after the final page.  I don't mean it leaves you thinking, or you are moved by the ending, or anything that trivial.  I am talking about a lingering feeling so much deeper that it can only be described as haunting.  For me, Bitter Angel was one of those books, and I loved every minute of it!

When Lila lives the same night twice, she knows that she is the key to saving her two best friends.  But which version was the real one?  When she wakes up to realize that she has the opportunity to live the same night for a third time, she decided to take action.  Will she be able to save herself and her friends this time around?

Bitter Angel is set in small-town Tennessee (woohoo!).  Megan Hand describes the area perfectly!  Even down to her description of the crisp outdoor air made me feel right at home.  And it is Hand's ability to perfectly describe a scene that brings the book to life.   So you feel every ounce of fear, strength, love and frustration with Lila as if you are living the experience with her.

I have to give Bitter Angel a 5-star review, because it is more than just a book... it is an experience!

Review:

The Last Hour is different from any other book that I have read.  Now, this is not a bad thing... it's just different.  It is not your stereotypical love story.  Yes the characters are in love, but there is more to the story than that.

We get a lot of details about Ray's military career, which is central to the plot of the story.  So if you like a tale of military action, then you will love this one.

Confession time for me... I had a bit of a hard time keeping some of the timeline straight in my head.  We see Ray and Carrie's memories out of order, which is a very natural way that they tend to flow, but as I reader I was looking for a few clues here and there of when and where we were at times.  Don't get me wrong, it is well written.  I just had to devote a little more brain power to reading this one.

Jude has spent the whole twenty three years of his life running. From what, he wasn't quite sure. His mother tried to keep him safe; a low profile, a constant move on the horizon, a week's pay always stashed away. She tried to instill in him that he was special somehow, though would never elaborate. He never felt different. He was so completely normal and vanilla that he wondered if it had all been in her head. But then she was murdered and all he saw was a running silhouette of a man as his mother said three final words to him. Three words that changed his whole being. Never stop running… Now he's semi-settled into a big town. The college is huge and easy to blend into. It's been three months since he had to move because 'Biloxi', as he calls the man who killed his mother, found him once more. Then Marley, an eighteen year old girl who is as infuriating as she is blissfully ignorant of her gorgeousness, smashes into his car with hers. Then smashes into his life as he realizes that whatever it is he has that Biloxi wants, she has it, too. And now, they're after them both.

Off Limits - 5-Star Review

Wow.  I absolutely fell in love with Off Limits!  I thought that Off Sides was really good, but I liked Off Limits a bit more.  To be frank, I was NOT an Emily fan from Off Sides.  So when I first saw that Off Limits was about her, my first thought was 'oh, boy... here we go!  Bring on the insane drama.'  Of course, Sawyer Bennett is too good of an author to give me the book that I expected to read.  No, no... she gives Emily a change of heart and personality along with a dose of maturity.  I actually came to like the character that I previously was annoyed by, and all within the first few pages (Point to Sawyer Bennett).

Of course, what is the point of having a good-girl if there is no bad boy to bring her out of her shell?  And Nix is just that and so much more!  As a war veteran, he is beautifully broken in so many ways.  And yet, beneath the damage and rough exterior is a heart looking for forgiveness and acceptance.  Think Travis Maddox, then add the stress of being a war hero, and you have an idea of who Nix is.  I dare you to not fall in love with Nix!

If you have already read Off Sides, then you will be happy to see the Ryan and Danny story continue in the background of Off Limits.  However, even if you have not had a chance to pick it up, still read Off Limits!  It does work as a stand-alone.  Personally, I liked reading them in order so I could really appreciate just how much Emily had matured between the books.  But in all seriousness, it doesn't matter which order you read the books in.  Just pick them up and read them both.  Like now!

Title: Off Limits

Release dateApril 16, 2013

Publisher: Big Dog Books, LLC

Age Group: New Adult

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Tour organized by: AToMR Tours

Book Description:

“There is a vulnerability there, hovering just below the surface. And I want to pick at it until I expose it. Then I want to kiss it."

Two years ago, Emily Burnham, had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life.  And she made it her mission to become a different person…a better woman.  Out from under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for the first time.  And she likes it.
Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation.  It's certainly the easiest way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.
When an accident brings Emily and Nix together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own fate. Struggling with his own pain, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s charms.  He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his heart.
Having grabbed life by the horns, Emily wants it all.  But is she willing to accept just the small part of himself that Nix is offering?  Can she reach the part of his soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?
This book is the follow up novel to Off Sides by Sawyer Bennett. It can be read as a stand-alone.

Dreamer - Promo

My Work Space---
On a beach at sunset----the burning orange globe is falling low to the west casting tiny rivulets of light that flit enticingly across the dark blue of the water. A spark of unseen flame ignites a nearby fire--- imagination takes hold. The reader joins the dance.

Unlike a painter requiring space for canvas, a writer carries the work area entirely in the mind like a storyteller of old. All that is needed is a pen and paper or a keyboard to set the words free. My desk ---such that it is--- is portable, my workspace often contained in a heartbeat.

The actual place where I usually transform ideas into communicable bits and pieces is a rather dull space. It’s a tiny corner of the world where all manner of beasts inhabit only my mind. Populated by computer, printer, keyboard and mouse, it would win no prizes for elegance or cleanliness. Yet, it is in this unremarkable spot where ideas become words.

I have worked outside on the lawn and in the woods, by the river and behind the barn---anywhere an idea becomes a spark. My current favorite lies near the river—a stone bench within sight of the water’s edge. I have been known to sit there for hours ‘contemplating nothing more than my navel’----according to some.
My most important companion in writing is my coffee mug. A creature of habit, I prefer a certain cup over others---until it succumbs to destruction. Like an ungrateful student who changes mentors at whim, I choose another porcelain container and move to the next cup of coffee…

Like other artists, writers are never alone---writing is only half of the process. The desk isn’t a magical spot. The enchantment comes from the reader when the small black and white scribblings are translated and reformed into ideas that take shape in the mind. For the work to be complete it must be read----it depends on you!

Excerpt
When the queen had realized that the scaly arms enclosed her, it was too late for her to scream. One clawed hand covered her mouth, the other wrapped tightly around her waist. With very little effort, the creature hauled her away into the brush, dragging her over rough terrain, jutting rocks, and spiny cacti toward the cliff. She tried her best to scream, fiercely biting the claw that held back her air, but the grip only tightened. She could feel rough scales at her back and hear the creature’s clucking breaths.
Umbra was carried to the cliff’s edge and held there for a moment as her life passed before her—over, gone, lost. She looked down on the sharp rocks among the roiling surf below. The wind blew hard, trying to push her back to safety. No human would survive that fall. She tried desperately to dig in her feet, to hold on to the edge, to stay on the towering cliff, all to no avail. The creature hurled her off the precipice into the air, cackling gleefully. Her heart pounded as she felt herself melting into the eternity of doom. For searing moments that seemed like hours, she flew unfettered through the night sky, high above the black rocks, and just as suddenly, she was caught in the grasp of strong claws. Only then did she hear the beating of its wings. Umbra screamed long and shrill, but the wind told her to be silent as it carried the sound away.
The queen was a rag doll in the clutches of a flying demon. The creature flew raggedly, carrying her weight with some difficulty against the shifting winds. She looked up helplessly and examined it. The beast was only slightly larger than a man. It was black from head to toe, a scaly skin and hair covering its wings.
A morgith, she identified it, a creature of the night. Neither man nor dragon, these lizard beings were beasts of legend. None had been seen for hundreds of years on this coast. It was thought that they sought the flesh of young women and children to feed their broods. Her grandmother had told her stories of these monsters to frighten her as a young girl. They were a myth. Now the myth carried her far north following the shear coast.

Off Sides - Review

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Off Sides in exchange for my honest review, so here goes... I loved it!  And no, it is not just because I got the book for free.  I am blessed to receive most of my books this way, and there is a great many that I do not like for this reason or that one.  But Sawyer Bennett is a master of the new adult genre!  The way that she weaves the tale of Ryan falling for Danny is brilliant!

Ryan, the all-American, son of a Congressman, hockey player learns to follow his heart in love, rather than keep up appearances after meeting Danny.  She literally makes him want to be a better man and he becomes protective over her in a way he never imagined himself being.  Of course, Danny is no delicate flower.  She is tough, self-assured, and a real gem!  So can she lower her walls of defense and let Ryan be her man?

Goodreads Synopsis
“I'm not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone...something...to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost...a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved...”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced her to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days...

Awakenings - 4-Star Review

Welcome to my stop on the Shadow Chaser blog tour hosted by YA Bound.  Click HERE to see the full blog tour schedule!

I was absolutely captivated by Awakenings!  Seriously, it is books like this that make me wonder how I functioned before Amazon's Kindle apps letting me read on any device... so I almost never have to put the book down.  If you are looking to escape your reality for a bit, then you have to pick up Awakenings. I was so engrossed that I lost complete track of time!

So here is why I fell in love with Awakenings.  First, it is so well written!  Hally Willmott doesn't make the reader imagine any details.  Instead, she acts as our tour guide as we experience this entirely new world that we otherwise could never have even dreamt of.  She vividly describes not only every sight and sound, but emotion, smell, and texture.  So as readers, we are not just reading a story, we are experiencing it along with the characters.

Second love, the characters.  Even when 16 year old, Jacey's world is flipped upside down, she remains a strong character.  Yes, she does have to fight against feelings of insecurity, but let's be honest here... what 16 year old doesn't?  For me, the range of Jacey's emotions were one thing that really made the story believable and brought it to life.  And of course, there is Vincent... oh Vincent.  There is a little bit of a Beautiful Creatures type bond between Jacey and Vincent in the beginning where she only knows him in her dreams, and even then  can only see his brilliant blue eyes.  But once they meet, he is her anchor.  And isn't that what all of us girls want in our men, an anchor?  So by the end of the book, you will want to push Jacey out of the way a bit (even though you love her) just to get your hands on Vincent because let's face it... he is perfect.

So overall, I thought that Awakenings was sweet, original, and an absolute joy to read!  So curl up this weekend with your new fictional boyfriend, Vincent.  I can promise that it will be love at first read.

Her parents have repressed their adversaries’ relentless tracking efforts by not utilizing their own mystical powers. They have chosen to conceal themselves within the only realm they knew they’d be able to survive. They are living under their self-imposed powerless sanctions on Earth, which constitutes the nineteenth nation of Nemele.

Her parents have never revealed their true identities to Jacey, consequently keeping her true lineage and unique birthright from her. I am quickly falling in love with Trisha Wolfe's work!  This is the second book of hers that I have read and reviewed, and I honestly cannot choose a favorite.

Of Silver and Beasts is extremely interesting.  Parts of the story line remind me of The Hunger Games, but set in a fantasy world.  In a country where the women are the leaders in everything from the government, religion, and the family, Kaliope is raised to be a warrior.  As she begins her career as such, she is selected to be the leader of the most prestigious group of protectors that surround the empress.  But with the threat of war, she is charged with protecting the prince of a neighboring realm, which has different values where the men are the leaders.

Beyond living a life of service and devotion to her empress, she is also trying to hide the secret that she has mercury coursing through her veins.  But everything happens for a reason, and every person has a purpose.

Fair warning, you will scream when you get to the cliffhanger ending!  I cannot wait for the sequel.

Excerpt

The cool sensation of the fresh water on my skin helps me forget my nerves and I lie back, floating just below the top of the water. My body dulls, the cold soothing my sore muscles, and I welcome the numbness. The ceiling of the cave is sprinkled with tiny clusters of white lights, dotting the canopy above our heads like stars in the sky. I feel as if I’m sitting on the rooftop of my apartment, staring at the night sky, not here in the Otherworld, awaiting my death.
The water rolls, rocking my body, and I glance over as Caben floats up beside me. He’s on his back also, and points to the lights dusting the cave ceiling.
“Diamonds,” he says.
“Really?” I don’t know much about any minerals other than mercury. And somehow, diamonds as our stars makes my chest heavy. It’s too beautiful. “How can you tell?”
“The ultraviolet light shows the impurities,” he says. “The imperfections actually absorb the dark light, causing the diamond to emit a visible glow.” He chuckles. “A very expensive lighting effect.”
I laugh. “Quite expensive.” They twinkle as they reflect the rippling water. “But almost more heavenly than the stars.” I lower my voice at the end, hoping he didn’t hear my spoken thoughts.
Caben doesn’t speak, and the trickling of the stream and lap of the pool becomes the only sound as we float in compatible silence. I could drift off, fall asleep in this peaceful place, but I know we still have a mission to complete before the Reckoning.
This thought awakens me, and I touch my feet to the bottom of the pool and begin to wade toward the edge.
I hear Caben’s heavy groan. “No you don’t,” he says, and captures the bottom of my tunic. He tugs me through the water, back to the pool’s center. “Not yet. This could be our last reprieve, and I plan for us to enjoy it.”
As I turn to face him, his fingers slip from my shirt to my waist, grazing my stomach. My skin prickles, and I shiver, matching the trembling water around us. His deep blue eyes meet mine, and he swallows, his Adam’s apple working. Slowly, he begins to inch up my tunic—
“Wait.” I place my hand on top of his.
He cranes an eyebrow. “It should really have time to dry before we go back.”
Logically, that makes sense. But the heated look he’s giving me says so much more. And regardless of the attraction I may feel for the prince—a woman would have to be blind—and whether or not we actually escape this hell ... what then? We share an intimate moment once, and go back to our stations in life, simply pretending nothing happened?
Or maybe I’m reading too much into his gaze. He’s a man, and physical desire is self-serving. He may die ... and he probably wants to bed a woman one last time. Everything about his character screams he’s not one who thinks past the moment.
I could lose myself for now, give in to the pulse quickening my blood with need, but I’ve never shown a man the clamp over my heart. It would have to be something I did for a different reason if I ever chose to do so. Not merely because I may die soon.
As I push his hand away and start to swim off, he grasps my waist, encircling his firm arms around my stomach, and pulls my back to his chest.
“Don’t run from me,” he breathes into my ear. “I’m not asking for anything. Not even whatever it is you’re hiding. Just stay here.”
