The Disease

At first, the story seems a little slow, but it quickly takes off and you are grateful that Hamilton took the time to explain the culture in which this story takes place.  There is just the right amount of detail about the twisted disease ravaging the entire world, a grand setting in dystopian Russia, and a pinch of love.  All together, it is the recipe of a griping tale that you will not be able to put down.

With the entire world battling a devastating disease, it is the Russians who develop a remedy.  Doctor Toropov is forced to decide between remaining faithful to her country and giving the scarce supply of the remedy only to the chosen citizens, or join her daughter's fight against the government and take the remedy to another country to be manufactured.  But so little is know about the drug, and what it's true side effects are.  Dr. Toropov is forced into making life or death decisions on every step of her journey, but will she make the right choice ultimately?

The Disease, by George Hamilton is wonderfully written, and impossible to put down.  I'm not one who re-reads books often, but this one is an exception to that rule.  I cannot wait to read and enjoy this one again.
