The Disease

At first, the story seems a little slow, but it quickly takes off and you are grateful that Hamilton took the time to explain the culture in which this story takes place.  There is just the right amount of detail about the twisted disease ravaging the entire world, a grand setting in dystopian Russia, and a pinch of love.  All together, it is the recipe of a griping tale that you will not be able to put down.

With the entire world battling a devastating disease, it is the Russians who develop a remedy.  Doctor Toropov is forced to decide between remaining faithful to her country and giving the scarce supply of the remedy only to the chosen citizens, or join her daughter's fight against the government and take the remedy to another country to be manufactured.  But so little is know about the drug, and what it's true side effects are.  Dr. Toropov is forced into making life or death decisions on every step of her journey, but will she make the right choice ultimately?

The Disease, by George Hamilton is wonderfully written, and impossible to put down.  I'm not one who re-reads books often, but this one is an exception to that rule.  I cannot wait to read and enjoy this one again.

When the Silence Ends

Wow! When the Silence Ends is captivating! I laughed, I cried, but overall I could not put it down.

Jade Kerrion gives a sweet nod to Alice in Wonderland by nicknaming the twin main characters Dee and Dum. When I saw that the story was about American society learning to live with mutants, my initial thought was, "here come the bad x-men references," but they never showed up! I was pleasantly surprised to see Kerrion describing the mutants, in vitros, and clones as being so much like any other human physically.

What I loved the most about this story was the main characters, Dee and Dum's strength and determination to make their world a better place for all humans alike. So many young adult books today show the characters being carefree and doing what they please, but Kerrion brings the story to a more interesting version of reality when the siblings decide to help others in their situation attend college by setting up a scholarship fund. They face several obstacles along the way, but keep their focus and determination to work hard to provide for themselves and help others along the way.

Forget Harry Potter and Twilight... every young adult should read this book!

The Night Circus

Let me start by saying that I do not think that there is anywhere near enough publicity for this book? I had never heard of it before a friend lent it to me saying only, "I think you will like it. It's my favorite book ever. And remember that the magic is real." My friend was right. Normally I breeze through a book in a day or two, but that seemed a cruel way to enjoy this piece of artwork. I read slower, wanting to take in and reflect on each plot segment, and there was a lot to take in.

The Night Circus is beautifully written love story. Erin Morgenstern has a way of flowing the story over a large time period and through the eyes of several different characters effortlessly. Even with several perspectives on the same story, it stays clear.

I was enchanted from the first page. Before I could return the book to my friend, I went to three local bookstores until I found a copy of my own. This is one that I will be reading again soon.

Starting the adventure

So I am just starting my new adventure of book blogging.  Over the next couple of weeks I will be publishing reviews of all my recently read books, and from there will continue the reading process.

With each review that I post, I will be 100% honest.  If I am not a fan of a book, I will let you know why.  But, if I love it, you can be guaranteed that I will shout it from the rooftops!  So stay tuned and I will be posting soon, and hopefully often.
